STUDENTS: SADSP exists for YOU

2009 Fun Race and Awards Ceremony:
Over 40 SADSP students skied the course on a sunny, spring day with soft snow. Fastest skiers included girls Cheyenne Lanik, Taviana Quezada, Erin Leadingham and boys Carlos Mendoza, Justin Powers, Jeremy Montoya

The Patrol  Memorial Award recognizes the student who most represents the spirit of snow sports.  This award is in memory of two Ski Apache pro patrollers—Tom Coombes and Crow Burden—who were great friends of the program.  The 2009 award went to Malikhi Hansen from NMSBVI in Alamogordo and Lazaro Palomino from Roswell HS.  Malakki and Lazaro have been skiing with us for several years.  Congratulations for your perseverance, skill, and  achievement.

Profiles of Some Students and Programs, 2009:
Roswell Life Skills Program:  A dedicated group braved an early show-up and a long drive to test their skills

Kinetic Kids from San Antonio were back for the second year and already booked for this year. Yeah!

Midland Area Retarded Citizens MARC crossed the desert and up into the mountains to play on the snow.

Some old friends from Esperanza and Tobosa developmental centers came back to the mountain.  So happy to be skiing again with Leticia, Eddie, Jerry, Tobias, Tory, Danny, Troy, Santiago, Denise, and Daniel.  These individuals prove that snow sports can be a lifelong activity.

New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NMSBVI) continued a winter skiing tradition and provided professional quality music and entertainment for the Fun Race Awards Ceremony. Cody and Drake sang “Reunited Again,” everyone from NMSBVI joined in. Later Taviana showed everyone how to dance!

Over twenty soldiers from the Ft. Bliss Restoration and Resilience Center joined us for a day of skiing in March

Bi-skiers:
Don Holmberg graced us with his good cheer and positive outlook; Jay Perez started last season and has already booked this year—with his girlfriend;

Bobbie Monk; Kenton Morgan returns!; Glen Berry; Local favorite Emma Farris from Capitan

Maria Greenfield made nice round turns on two prosthesis and outriggers—Okies rule!

Return students:  Sarah and Hannah Hughes, George Toone, MiMi Baughman, Libby Boydston, Creed Chisum, Jayro Gomez, Davis Lovett, Collin McGookey, David Vivanco, Charlie Washburn, Tasha Carpenter, Tristan Houston, Eric Kegel, Anna Luisa Westendarp (all the way from Mexico City), and Troy Poe (skiing with SADSP for over 20 years)

Spotlight on a veteran instructors:
Bill Riggles has been with the program since the Diana days and skiing since Sierra Blanca was a glacier.  “Mr. Bill” is the go-to guy for any students that need extra help and patience. As a photographer and web-site designer Bill helps the program in myriad ways including a good sense of humor and mucho experience.

Patti Gray is a gentle soul who teaches from the heart and students respond to her mind, body, and spirit approach. Patti is multi-talented as a certified Healing Touch Practioner, National Certified Massage Therapist, certified Qi Gong instructor, certified Adaptive Instructor, and a leader in the Lincoln County Sheriff Posse. Patti is also a US Army veteran and brags that she “made the best pies in the Army while at Ft. Bliss.”

SADSP couldn’t accommodate the special programs and large groups without the service of the volunteers.  Many volunteers like Frank Cannella, Carolyn Henson, Carolyn Scarborough, Molly Boyd, Beth Buchanan, and Casteel Martel have been helping with the program for years and have made special friendships with the students.

Kudos to Mike Kakuska and the Roswell teachers—their participation allows SADSP to accommodate the “School to Ski” program from Roswell and Goddard HS.  Also, thanks to  Patrick Burris for his leadership in bringing ENMU-Roswell Special Services Ski Club. Mike and Patrick also serve on the SADSP Board of Directors and make the drive from Roswell on cold and snowy highways.

The Alto Ski Club (“no dues, just booze”) are great friends of the program.  If anyone is interested in volunteering ask Bill Craigo, Dave Powers, and Don Kilroy—they know the ropes.

We need volunteers to help with weekday programs in Jan & Feb:  NMSB&VI, Roswell Special Ed and local Sped programs, Kinetic Kids, Rio Grande Spinal Cord Injury Group, and others.  Know anyone that wants to help?

We are forming a chapter of Disabled Sports/USA and need members and directors.  This is a great opportunity to become involved in a national program that benefits individuals with physical disabilities.  Please contact us if you or someone you know is interested.

SADSP is a 501(c)3 non-profit and can not exist without the help of grantors, sponsors of fund-raising events, and benefactors who believe in the program and step forward to help, both financially and in kind.  The staff and students of SADSP sincerely thank you!

George and Amy Toone  financially (and emotionally) rescued the program with a most timely donation in December.  I’m sure “tractor Man” will tell us all about Africa this winter. Out of Africa and onto the snow!

Ski Run Road Challenge
—this event is destined to become a major running event in New Mexico and benefits the disabled program—last year it raised over $2500

Silent Auction
—for over twenty years, always the last Saturday in January

SADSP’s largest and oldest fund raising event.
The 2009 Silent Auction was held at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Convention Center and was one of the most successful ever.  The Silent Auction succeeds because the entire community—individual and business—contributes time, talent, and resources.  THANK YOU!

Special thanks to:
*MC’s Eric Gile and Larry Schneider

Lincoln County Sheriffs Posse went above and beyond the call of duty by closing  tables AND providing security—a tough job and truly appreciated

Kathleen Kennedy donated an automobile that was a huge moneymaker for the program

Ski Apache Ski School vs. Ski Patrol raised over a thousand dollars through a challenge event.  The challenge was close until ski instructor Istafon Fuzak broke the deadlock.

Kambree’s wonderful grandparents, the Wilbanks and Sowers families are extremely generous  to SADSP

Congratulations to Darlene Snyder of Capitan—winner of raffle—two round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines

January 30, 2010 Silent Auction, Inn of the Mountain Gods Convention Center—Don’t miss it!

The Tee Fore Ski event was canceled this year—the Board felt there was too much conflict with other events. Perhaps it can be revived if someone wants to take charge?
